Vital Research is seeking a Data Specialist responsible for managing complex data files, survey programming, tracking electronic data collection, and collaborating with database developers on database design.


  • Use a variety of software tools to organize, match, and process data files from multiple sources, including MS Excel and MS Access
  • Analyze data across geographies using data mapping tools
  • Audit and correct data errors to ensure data integrity and quality
  • Perform basic quantitative data analysis using software like Excel and SPSS
  • Manage complex online surveys and offline mobile surveys
  • Manage computer tablets and laptop hardware and software
  • Write and test survey programs, including all survey logic
  • Create data tracking systems and generate status reports
  • Assist with data collection (e.g. phone interviews, verification calls)
  • Perform quality assurance testing of databases
  • Document data components in project materials, such as reports and training materials
  • Train and supervise temporary data management staff
  • Communicate with field staff and provide technical support on online or offline surveys and hardware
  • Research and collect information to assist VR leadership with decision making process for new products, such as offline mobile survey software
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to address data issues.

  • Create codebooks for data entry and analysis


  • Bachelor’s degree; data science preferred
  • Three years of data management experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with a knack for creating pivot tables, utilizing lookup functions and other complex formulas to track and manage data
  • Microsoft Access skills with the ability to create tables, design queries and reports, including familiarity with SQL; preferred
  • Some experience with computer science/coding and mapping software
  • Detail oriented with a keen eye for catching the slightest errors and producing highly accurate data
  • Strong technical ability with a knack for learning new software, concepts, tooling, and data specifications to ensure that the information that we provide is top-notch quality
  • Ability to explain technical information simply and accurately to non-technical internal and external clients
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work assignments simultaneously
  • Capability to identify and solve problems creatively while maintaining a positive attitude, especially in response to unpredictable work situations
  • Able to work well independently and in a team
  • Word process at least 45 WPM
  • Adhere to all data security and privacy protocols
